terroir (ter-WAHR) /terˈwär/ noun

The complete natural environment in which a product is produced - including the soil, topography, climate, and human traditions - that gives the product its distinctive character. From the French word for "earth" or "soil," terroir encompasses both the physical elements of place (terrain, geology, microclimate) and the cultural practices that have developed there. Literally translated as "sense of place," terroir captures how geography and community combine to create something that could exist nowhere else.

The taste of belonging…

Terroir speaks of how a place marks its foods with a unique character - in our case, how the soil, sun, and sky of California shape our environment, and by extension, our harvests of foods and wines.

But there's another terroir we create together: the sense of place that blooms when friends and family gather at a table set with intention and love. Tonight, as you taste the desert sunshine in the Shields dates, the coastal fog in the Point Reyes cheese, and the Russian River soil in the pinot noir, know that you have also made your mark here - in this home, at our table, and in our hearts.

For while nature has crafted the flavors on our plates, it is you - your laughter, your stories, your presence - who creates the most precious terroir of all: the taste of belonging.
